Case Study #1

How would you market unsought goods and services to people during pandemic?

Role title: Marketing Site Lead

The Problem:

Brigham Young University-Hawaii where I received my Bachelor's Degree partnered with Nomi Health, a private healthcare company, to execute weekly Covid-19 test on campus in an effort to bring their students back to campus safely and start in-person classes for the Fall 2021 semester. We had to have at least 80% of the students vaccinated to make this happen.

The Solution:

Medical service is known as one of the unsought goods and services and especially Covid-19 vaccination was the most sensitive topic since 2019 up until now. Marketing the Covid-19 vaccines as mandatory for the school's re-opening was not an easy task. We faced oppositions from parents and general public. As part of our marketing efforts, we collaborated with local businesses, Hawaii Food Bank, Hawaii Department of Health to spread our sense of purpose through their social media presence and engagement-worthy digital content.

The Outcome:

Lesson I learned from this project was that social media is the new way of marketing and marketers are not in control anymore. Consumers are in control now and marketers' role is to offer goods and services that bring value to consumers. Having a shared-value with consumers is any organisation's biggest advantage. During the last 12 months, we have out-performed our goals and objectives. Vaccination rate reached 99% among BYUH students, 98% among faculty members, and 88% among community members.

Case Study #2

How to recognise the bottle neck in your workflow and increase operational efficiency?

Role title: Human Resources Clerk

The Problem:

Polynesian Cultural Center is Hawaiian #1 paid tourist attraction with over 1000 employees and 80% of which is part-time student workers. Therefore, employee turnover rate is very high compared to rival companies. We received about 40-50 new job applications every day thus hiring process took about two to three weeks minimum. Due to work overload, hiring process got slow and inefficient. I remembered how I had to wait 4 weeks after my job interview when I first got this job. So, I decided to decrease this hiring process from 3 weeks down to 1 week.

The Solution:

In our hiring process, the first step is screening all the job applications. Second, eligible applicants will be contacted and scheduled for job interview with our department/unit managers. Third, applicants who passed their job interview will be contacted to come and do the paperwork with us. The last step is to attend our new employee training program. After carefully tracing our entire workflow, I realised the bottle neck was the first step "application screening". We needed to hire one more person in our team, or allocate the extra tasks between our team members.

The Outcome:

As a result, we reached our goal to narrow it down to 1 week and received many positive feedbacks from applicants and avoided from work overload. Company reputation increased which brought us immeasurable values and profits.

Building "Community" on Social Media with Zero Budget

Class project for Marketing class

The Problem:

Sometimes we are tasked with marketing projects with zero budget and limited amount of time. In this case, we need to know how to reach our target audience effectively and efficiently. In my marketing class during senior year of university, we were challenged by our professor to choose a topic that we feel passionate about and create Instagram page and attract our target audience to our IG page within 2 months of period. The goal was to learn how to manage social media pages and use them in marketing.

The Solution:

I chose "gluten-free diet" as my topic because that is something I live everyday and feel passionate to share with others. When we are passionate about something and desire to share with others, we work extra hard despite how much time it consumes. We get creative and try different tools to reach those that have the same interest with me. I learned how to gain followers that I don't even know personally, and engage them through posts, stories, reels and videos.

The Outcome:

Within 2 months of period, I gained 350 followers without using any hashtags or English as a common language. Considering the fact that Mongolia is such a small country and the concept of gluten-free diet hasn't been discovered by majority of the people, I personally think I did a good job.

Case Study #4

How would you raise awareness of Title IX?
Assertiveness, Setting Boundaries, and Human Empowerment

Class project for school's Title IX Department

The Problem:

Not all topics are exciting. One of the projects I worked on with my classmates for my marketing class in senior year at Brigham Young University Hawaii was to prepare web content, social media content, physical posters and event plan for the school's Title IX department. Our goal was to raise awareness of Title IX topics on and off campus. Title IX is a federal civil rights law in the United States of America that was passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives federal money. For students, knowing their rights is crucial to receive education in safe environment where there is no sex-based discrimination and inequality.

The Solution:

Our team focused on certain topics within the Title IX Act: Assertiveness, Setting Healthy Boundaries, and Women Empowerment. We prepared physical posters, social media content and event plan for the month of December, 2021.

The Outcome:

The result of this project should bring both new and the current students on and off campus to the knowledge of their rights to study in a safe and healthy environment and teach them how to be more assertive when expressing their thoughts and interests. Ultimately, teaching them how to set healthy physical, emotional and intellectual boundaries in social environment. Mental health is part of this project as well.
